The mission of Talladega County Jail is to provide for the safe and secure detention of offenders in order to protect the staff, inmates and citizens of Talladega County. The Jail is primarily a pre-trial detention facility housing County, Municipal, and State inmates. Due to State Prison overcrowding a recent contract with the Alabama Department of Corrections allows the Jail to house short term, minimum security state inmates.
The Talladega County Jail began operations at its present location in 1993 with an inmate capacity of 125. The constant increase in the Average Daily Inmate Population dictated the need for additional space. To achieve the additional space, the present facility was expanded in December, 2011 using the “design build” concept which was the first for a county jail in the State of Alabama. The new construction provided 332 new beds, sally port, kitchen and laundry in addition to the 125 existing beds and 28 work center beds. The Jail capacity is currently 485 with a daily population of approximately 340. All new construction and renovation was funded by both existing and some new outside revenue sources without any increase in taxes to the citizens of Talladega County.
The Talladega County Jail is under the supervision of Jail Administrator Captain Ron Smith and Assistant Jail Administrator Lieutenant Shea Brown. The remainder of the staff consists of 50 Corrections Officers, 4 Administrative Clerks and 5 Food Service Personnel. The Jail is located at 150 East Renfroe Road, Talladega Alabama. The mailing address is The Talladega County Jail, Post Office B, Talladega, Alabama, 35161. The telephone number is 256-761-2000 and the Fax number is 256-362-5670.
